Marine Coatings and Linings FAQ’s

Q: What marine coating services does Long Painting provide?

Long Painting Company provides marine painting and protective coating services for tug boats, ferry boats, fishing vessels, barges, dry docks, ramps, and other marine structures throughout the Pacific Northwest. Services include hull protection, topside exteriors, non-skid deck coatings, machinery spaces and piping, tank linings, abrasive blasting, and lead abatement.

Q: Why do marine structures need specialized coatings instead of standard paint?

Marine environments combine saltwater corrosion, constant moisture, UV exposure, and abrasion from waves and debris. Standard paint fails fast under those conditions. Marine coating systems use high-build epoxies, anti-corrosive primers, non-skid topcoats, and specialty tank linings designed to bond in wet environments and resist saltwater chemistry. Long Painting employs AMPP-trained painters and NACE III-certified superintendents to apply them.

Q: Are you qualified for Corps of Engineers and Federal marine projects?

Yes. Long Painting Company is QP1 and QP2 certified, which qualifies the company to work on US Army Corps of Engineers and Federal marine and infrastructure projects. The company also has experienced shipyard personnel on staff for vessel work.

Q: How often do marine structures need recoating?

Recoating intervals depend on the structure, the coating system, and the exposure, but most marine assets need a coating inspection every 2 to 5 years and a full recoat every 5 to 10 years. Catching coating failure early prevents corrosion from reaching the substrate, which is the difference between a touch-up and a major repair.

Q: Can you work around dry dock schedules and minimize downtime?

Yes. Dry dock time is the single biggest constraint on most marine projects, and Long Painting plans crews, equipment, and coating schedules around it. The company often completes vessel coating work ahead of schedule by staging materials, preparing surfaces in parallel, and running phased crews around the operational plan.

Q: What marine clients and projects do you serve?

Long Painting serves vessel owners and operators, marina and dock owners, and waterfront industrial facilities across the Pacific Northwest. Work covers commercial vessels, ferry boats, fishing fleets, barges, docks and waterfront infrastructure.
