St. Johns Bridge in Northwest Portland was a $38 million dollar restoration and improvement project that began in March of 2003 and was completed in 2005. The project included the replacement of the road deck with full containment for abrasive blasting and repainting to QP-1 and QP-2 standards. Also included in the project was waterproofing the main cables, including the replacement of 270 of the cables, upgrades to the lighting, and improving pedestrian and bike access.
The bridge was closed each night for work access and at one point, closed continuously for a month. At the height of the project, Long Painting had 70 painters working on it.
